But drama is life for Jino Joseph. Hailing from Iritty in Kannur district, Jino is blessed with thespian talents. A Journalist turned playwright and an eloquent storyteller whom the young drama enthusiasts adore, Jino Joseph brings neorealism to traditional drama. A post graduate in Mass Communication and Journalism from Kannur University, he has worked for over 30 productions in the amateur and children’s drama spectrum, proving his mettle in the domain. Drama enthusiasts highlight his creations as a fitting reply to those who lament that the golden days of theatre art are gone. Frequently conversing his thoughts with the audience on sociopolitical conditions, Jino Joseph is a master in the making of theatrical satire. The messages he delivers through his plays are thought provoking and there is no other reason why awards and accolades come his way.
Jino Joseph’s entry into the world of drama was not accidental. He had an affinity to theatre art from his childhood days itself. He participated in many drama competitions at the school level and won prizes. His obsession to drama continued. Nothing could douse the fire in him. When his college mates embarked on shining careers, Jino held drama close to his heart. He rose to the stardom with his unique writing and scripting skills. The socio political incidents became the themes of his plays, which the audience received with high applause.
Jino’s innate passion for drama, has carved a niche for himself. His plays have gone places. Inspired by his contributions to theatre, a group of drama enthusiasts from Koduvally in Kozhikode formed a troupe christened ‘The Black theatre’. Jino Joseph’s prowess has hugely helped the budding talents to emerge as notable actors. He has been the creative director of ‘Maanjuna’, a
permanent theatre for children.
A charismatic playwright who portrays the life and struggles of the common man, Jino has scripted and directed many short films, Urumbukal, Uppum Upplittathum, Penthattakam (documentary) to name a few. Penthattakam is the story of women theatre activists of Kerala. To mark his soft entry into the tinsel world, Jino had directed a feature film for Don Bosco Communications. This enterprising story teller believes that he can excel in the filmdom too. There is no wonder that he clinched the most coveted ‘ Mahindra Excellence in Theatre’award,reckoned as the Oscar of Indian drama, twice. The play ‘Mathi’(Sardine) won the Kerala Sahithya Academy award in 2015 and the Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Academy award thrice in different categories.
‘Nona’ (lie), the drama which revolves around the goodness of a village and the naive residents there exposes the evils and wickedness of the present day administrative machinery. ‘Nona’ was adjudged the best drama in the International Theatre festival of Kerala conducted by Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Academy.
